What licenses you need
- Sync license — for using the recording with audio content
- Master use license — from the master rights holder
- Mechanical license — for the underlying composition
- All three for any commercially-distributed podcast — there is no blanket podcast license
Podsafe libraries vs. premium licensing
"Podsafe" libraries pre-clear all three rights for a flat subscription. Premium licensing gets you brand-name tracks at per-use rates. Most independent podcasts mix both — podsafe for theme and bumpers, premium for spotlight moments.
On fair use (mostly: don't)
Fair use covers commentary and criticism, but the safe harbor is much narrower than podcasters assume. Playing 15 seconds under voiceover for "vibes" is not fair use. Reviewing the song's musicology with cited examples is closer.
For rights holders: pricing podcast sync
Podcasts pay less per use than film/TV but compound over years of evergreen episodes. Price per-episode for placements in branded shows; price per-quarter or annual for theme music. OneKindMedia's sync team handles both pricing models from the same surface.
